Backpacks Provide Variety Of Uses
Nothing is much more versatile and useful in today's society than the backpack. The history of backpacks goes to ancient times when hunters would use them to carry their prey. Today, the back pack can be found on boys and girls all over the world as they head to school, some with wheels, some with one arm sling, others with two. The variety and styles have expanded exponentially making them as much a fashion statement as a back to school necessity.
In the past, this versatile luggage was called a knapsack or pack sack until the term backpacks was coined in 1910. Sometimes simply called by the generic term packs, especially in a hunting or outdoors context, it's a general term as compared to similar bags like the duffel or saddlebags. Today, the variety of backpacks is enormous. From a generic large load bag with an internal frame that fits close to the body and are made with a series of straps to keep the load evenly distributed to the external camping and hiking bags that carry odd shaped loads, the backpack has become a useful tool in many walks of life.
Special use backpacks have also evolved as technology has too. There are special laptop bags that have padded compartments as well as camera backpacks that have special compartments for the equipment. Additionally, there are companies in the marketplace that specialize in bags for paintball equipment, historical re-enactment and messenger bags with only one strap. The rolling backpacks are often used to reduce the strain on the back in schools and as travelling luggage. Companies like Jansport and Timbuk2 have perfected the specialty bags and even have self designing websites that allow the consumer to design his own bag.

Backpacks for travel are quite common and ones that allow for odd shapped cargo are growing in popularity. From the backpacker with the fitted hydration bottle to the skate boarder with need of a longer bag, there's something for everyone. The prices, inexpensive for a Star Wars backpack that can be picked up at local discount stores or pricey as one can spend hundreds of dollars on specialized camping bags. |
